Negative Emission Technologies (NETs)

Negative Emission Technologies (NETs) provide a permanent way of removing carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere.  There are three broad categories:

  1. biological – the use of photosynthesis to transform CO2 into biomass
  2. industrial – the use of chemicals to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and sequestering of CO2 at the point of combustion such as CCS and BECCS.
  3. mineral – the use of mineral processes to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Many rocks naturally react with CO2 and remove it from the atmosphere, albeit over a long timescale.
