Bio-energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)

Bio-energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is an emerging technology for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions by combining bioenergy (that is energy from biomass: trees, crops and plant-based products) with carbon capture and storage (CCS).  BECCS technologies provide the benefit negative carbon emissions as  trees and crops extract carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere as they grow.  When the biomass is used as fuel by power plants, the usage of CCS via CO2 injection into geological formations prevents release of carbon dioxide emissions back into the atmosphere.
