PALcarbon – Carbon Dashboard

Carbon Dashboard Overview

PALcarbon is produced by Predict Ability Ltd (PAL). PALcarbon Dashboards provide intraday tracking of fuel usage, carbon emissions and potential carbon liability exposure. This is made possible by using PAL’s scientifically calculated, real-time carbon pricing across all energy types, including renewables. Features include:

  • Intraday tracking of power generation, carbon emissions and carbon costs for 30 countries.
  • Historical tracking of carbon metrics for 100 more countries.
  • Dollar prices on damage attributable to climate change per tonne of CO2 emitted,
  • Selected fuel and energy types price-weighted by their CO2 impact and usage
  • A future-proofed pricing scheme for fossil fuel and renewable energy types that will work even after CO2 emissions cease.

The PALcarbon app is the data and calculation vehicle that Predict Ability Ltd has published as the world’s first independent, scientifically robust scheme for a fair and meaningful approach to dealing with past, present and future carbon emissions. It has a major advantage over existing cap and trade systems: it is not vulnerable to political manipulation.

The science that underpins PALcarbon is explained in ‘Predicting the Price of Carbon: How to Crack the Climate Change Code for Good’. Written by Richard H. Clarke, Director (Research), Predict Ability Ltd, this book is available to buy in electronic version from iBooks and Kindle, and in paperback from Amazon.

CO2 emissions are not going to stop any time soon, and their consequences will last for hundreds of years. PALcarbon is a common sense pricing algorithm for a carbon world.

Dashboard Detail

A description of the available charts, fields and gauges is as follows.

Fields

  • Carbon Spot Price – the global carbon price based on weather related loss and damage that is attributable to climate change. Prices are updated frequently throughout the day in conjunction with the latest temperature anomaly data. Prices are in US$ per tonne of COemitted.
  • 3M Future – the predicted carbon price in 3 months time, using the current temperature anomaly.
  • 6M Future – the predicted carbon price in 6 months time, using the current temperature anomaly.
  • Cumulative Price – the predicted integral price incorporating cumulative emissions since 1896. See Predicting the Price of Carbon, Chapter 8 for more on the cumulative carbon pricing model.
  • Energy Spot – Global carbon price expressed in US$ per megawatt hour of electricity consumed. Energy Price = Carbon Price x Carbon Intensity
  • Carbon Intensity – the average emission rate for the current energy mix for the given sector/country/region. Expressed in tonnes of COemitted per megawatt hour of useful energy consumed.
  • Global Emissions – the estimated global carbon emissions for the year to date, expressed in mega-tonnes of CO2.
  • Global Damage – the estimated global weather related loss and damage attributable to climate change, for the year to date. Expressed in US$ millions.
  • Temperature Anomaly – the latest intra-day global temperature anomaly using a 1980-2015 baseline.

Gauges

  • Carbon Intensity – the average emission rate for the current energy mix for the given sector/country/region. Expressed in tonnes of COemitted per megawatt hour of useful energy consumed (tCO2/MWh).
  • CO2 Mix – the proportion of COemissions arising from each energy type currently being consumed. Hover over each segment of pie to see energy type and emission amounts.
  • Energy Mix – the proportion of energy produced/consumed for each energy type. Hover over each segment of pie to see energy type and energy output.
  • Power Generation Gauges – one gauge per energy source indicating the current power output or energy being consumed, in gigawatt hours. Gauges are calibrated to reflect approximate current installed capacity were possible.

Charts

  • Carbon Price By Energy Source – the last 12 months of carbon prices, per energy source, for the given sector/country/region.
  • Carbon Intensity – the last 12 months carbon intensity, for the given sector/country/region.
  • Power Generation by Energy Source – the last 12 months power generation/energy consumed per day. As new energy sources are added to PALcarbon, a corresponding step up in the chart may be seen.
  • Carbon Emissions by Energy Source – the last 12 months COemissions per day. As new energy sources are added to PALcarbon, a corresponding step up in the chart may be seen.
  • Carbon Damage by Energy Source – the last 12 months of carbon damage by energy source. Damages are shown in US$ per month, one column per month. The most recent months damages will increase over the course of the month.
  • Carbon Revenue by Energy Source – the last 12 months of carbon tax revenue, shown in US$ per month. The total damage and revenue figures for each month will be the same (the columns in the damage and revenue charts are of the same height). The proportion of damage and revenue for a specific fuel type for a given month will differ.  This is due to the fact that energy sources with a higher carbon intensity and usage will have a higher carbon price, and hence a higher carbon tax revenue.
  • Global Carbon Indices – the last 12 months of global carbon spot and future prices. Futures prices in the last 3 months are calculated using spot temperature anomalies.  Prior to 3 months, futures prices are calculated using forward temperature anomalies.
  • Global Temperature Anomaly – the last 12 months of global daily temperature anomaly data using a 1980-2015 baseline. A 60-day moving average has been applied to smooth the temperature anomaly.
